Archos GamePad now available for purchase in Europe

Archos first announced their new GamePad tablet back in August of this year. Fast-forward to today, and the device is now available. If you happen to be in Europe anyway. Those of us that reside in North America wont be able to purchase a Archos GamePad until sometime in the first quarter of 2013.

In case you don’t remember the Archos GamePad, check out the video below to get an idea of what this thing offers. Its basically a 7 inch tablet that features 14 physical gaming buttons and Archos’ exclusive button mapping software that allows you to convert touch-controlled games to physical button controlled games.

The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-powered, Archos GamePad features a 7-inch screen that has 1024 x 600 pixel resolution. Processing power is provided by a 1.6GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor with a quad-core Mali 400 MP GPU and 1GB worth of RAM. Other hardware specs include a front facing camera for video chat, a mini-HDMI port, 8GB worth of internal storage, and a MicroSD card slot that supports up to 32GB cards.

Unquestionably, the most attractive hardware feature of the Archos GamePad is it’s dedicated gaming controls. Much like Sony’s PS Vita, you’ll get a directional pad, two thumb sticks, two shoulder triggers, and all of the other gaming buttons you’ve come to expect from a modern controller. Archos’ mapping tool allows any game to be adapted for use with these physical controls.

As was mentioned above, the Archos GamePad is shipping with Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system and it also includes the Google Play Store.  All of that means you will have no problem finding a ton of great games to play. Especially if you’re a fan of emulators and ROMs.

We will keep you updated once we learn a firm Archos GamePad release date for North America. Europeans can order the Archos GamePad for €149.99 from the Archos Website.
