CradlePoint MBR1200 & Verizon Wireless Pantech 4G LTE USB Modem Review

CradlePoint MBR1200 Router

The CradlePoint MBR1200 is a versatile cellular router that allows users to easily create a network using a 3G or 4G mobile broadband modem. This is really useful in situations where hard-wired networks aren’t available or would be too expensive or time consuming to install.

Cellular routers like the MBR1200, serve the same basic purpose as any other wireless router. It takes an internet connection and allow multiple devices to connect to it. The major difference between the CradlePoint and the wireless router you have in your house is where the internet connection originates. Most wireless routers connect to the internet via a wire coming out of the wall, while the CradlePoint can connect via wired internet or a 3G/4G mobile broadband modem with a cellular connection.

To provide users with as many options as possible, the MBR1200 can support up to five different mobile broadband modems at once. It features three USB ports, one express card slot and one PC card slot. Each of the five internet sources can be used simultaneously to help ensure users will have a connection pretty much anywhere needed. The MBR1200 can quickly and automatically switch between internet sources as required. This is a great feature for anyone that depends on having a internet connection.

Verizon Pantech 4G LTE USB Modem

Using the MBR1200 and a Verizon Wireless Pantech 4G LTE USB Modem allowed me to effortlessly create a network anywhere I wanted. The entire process involved plugging the power supply into an outlet, connecting the other end to the router and putting the modem into one of the USB ports.  That’s it. From start to finish you can set-up a new network in seconds.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE USB modem worked great, I never had a problem finding signal and the resulting internet connection was as fast as my cable provider’s service.

The CradlePoint MBR1200 came with a 110v A/C power supply, mounting hardware and a CAT5 cable. Available accessories include a security cover that protects the attached modems from theft and high-gain antennas that will extend the useable range to and from the router.  In addition, a 12v cigarette lighter is available and with it you can use the MBR1200 in your vehicle. That means you could theoretically create your own version of a Google street view car if you wanted and who wouldn’t want to do that?

Conclusion:

I can honestly say that the CradlePoint MBR1200 is the nicest router I’ve ever used. It is incredibly easy to set-up and versatile.  With that said, it offers features that the typical consumer would rarely need (especially when considering most smartphones now have a mobile hotspot feature built in). That’s not to say its a bad thing for consumers, having more options is always better and the MBR1200 can function the same as any other wireless router will. It works with cable or DSL internet service as well as it does mobile broadband modems, so you could use it to replace the router you already have on your desk, but it would be an overkill.

The CradlePoint MBR1200 is admittedly designed with businesses in mind. The box even says “Business Series” on it and as a router that is meant for businesses, it is a great solution. It can provide a primary internet connection and function as a back up in case other service providers fail. If you depend on having access to the internet, the CradlePoint MBR1200 has you covered.
