The Garmin Fenix 2 can now display Smart Notifications from Android Devices

Garmin Fenix 2 Smart Notifications for Android AlertThe latest firmware updates to roll out for Garmin’s Fenix platform of GPS-enabled wristwatches brings a feature that is sure to make many owners very happy. The Garmin Fenix, Fenix 2, Tactix and D2 can finally display Smart Notifications from Android devices!

Garmin Smart Notifications is an incredibly useful feature that allows users to view all of the notifications from their smartphone on their Garmin device as they arrive. The feature first made its debut on the original Garmin Fenix nearly a year ago, but has only been compatible with certain Apple iOS devices up until now. Garmin Smart Notifications does require Bluetooth 4.0 to work, so keep in mind that it might not be available on older Android devices.

To use the Smart Notifications feature, you’ll first need to update both the Garmin Connect Mobile App on your Android device and the watch’s firmware to the latest available versions. That last step can be accomplished easily by plugging your watch into a computer and allowing the Garmin Express program to download and install the update for you. More information for each model of watch can be found at the links below:

Once you have everything updated and the devices are paired together, launch the Garmin Connect mobile app and go into the settings menu. From there, you’ll be able to enable the Smart Notifications feature, add notifications from third party applications and determine which notification types are sent to your Garmin watch.

With Smart Notifications, you’ll be able to view incoming calls, missed calls and voice mails, read full text messages and emails, and receive alerts from social media networks and the calendar all from your paired Garmin device. As far as I can tell, the feature actually works with any app that can post notifications to the Android status bar, making it rather useful for all kinds of things. For example, my watch just notified me that a uTorrent download had completed as I was typing this article up.

Garmin Smart Notifications is a great addition to the Fenix platform of GPS-enabled watches, and it is nice to see that Android users will finally be able to begin enjoying the feature.
