Today’s NVIDIA SHIELD Update Includes Android KitKat And GameStream On Any Network
NVIDIA has done a great job of supporting the SHIELD so far, and today’s update is more proof that they are committed to bringing new features and improvements to their little beast of a handheld gaming system. Besides bringing Android 4.4.2 KitKat, this update includes a few things users have been asking for since the SHIELD first launched.
Perhaps the most exciting part of this update is the fact that NVIDIA GameStream has finally left behind its long-standing “beta” status and now includes many new and welcomed features, including the ability to play your PC games over any network! That means you’ll be able to leave your PC at home and play its games on your NVIDIA SHIELD wherever you have a fast enough WiFi connection.
GameStream will also now work with gaming notebooks and laptops, provided that the mobile PC in question includes either a GTX 600M, 700M, or 800M GPU. NVIDIA has stated that GameStream currently offers native support for over 100 PC games, but users will now be able to manually add ANY of their PC games to their GameStream library.
Out of the box, the NVIDIA SHIELD’s game pad can be used to control over 300 Android titles, but anyone can add controller support to any Android game they choose with the GamePad Mapper. Thankfully, today’s update also brings some improvements to the GamePad Mapper. Hopefully that will make the process of adding custom control mappings to Android games even easier than it was.
Don’t worry too much if the update hasn’t made its way to your SHIELD yet. It is being rolled out in phases and should arrive to everyone within the next several days. In case you don’t know how to check for updates on the NVIDIA SHIELD I’ll go over the steps:
Simply go into Settings and then scroll to the very bottom of the page and tap on “About SHIELD”. In the new screen, tap on “System updates” and then tap on the “Check now” button.
Also, don’t forget that the NVIDIA SHIELD is still on sale from Amazon. The sale drops the price of the world’s most powerful handheld gaming system to only $200 and lasts till the end of April. If you’ve ever wanted a NVIDIA SHIELD, now is the time to get one.
