Sony bringing “Floating Touch” technology to phones with the new Xperia sola (Video)

Sony seems to be getting serious about its phone business.  They have announced a total of four new Xperia smartphones since putting an end to the Sony Ericsson partnership.  The first three were introduced during the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and now Sony is announcing yet another smartphone, this time it is in the form of the Sony Xperia sola. This latest addition to Sony’s herd of Android powered smartphones features a 1GHz dual-core processor, a 3.7″ Reality display powered by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine, 3D Surround surround sound, a 5 megapixel fast capture camera and a new innovative floating touch system.  This unique touch interface promises to allow users to navigate the web by hovering a finger over the screen.  Sony’s Xperia sola will be available in red, black and white and is expected to release in the second quarter of 2012.

Now for some bad news, the Xperia sola will launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It is kind of disappointing to see so many Android OEMs still making devices that will be running Gingerbread in the later parts of 2012.  Sony has said that an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be rolled out soon after release.  So I can’t help but wonder why not just release the phone with Ice Cream Sandwich in the first place?
