Surface Pro 3 Announced, Will Go On Sale Tomorrow Starting at $799
The successor to arguably the best Windows convertible has been announced with a ton of features, improvements and configurations. Fresh off the event in NYC that started at 11:00 AM ET, the Surface Pro 3 was touted as the device to truly replace the laptop in the form factor of a tablet; a common goal Windows OEMs including Microsoft have been consistently striving for. The most striking aspect of the launch was the fact that they made the device just 9.1 mm thin which they say is the “Thinnest Core product ever made” and weighing just 1.76 pounds. The screen size has been bumped up from the 10.6 inch mark to 12 inch optically bonded ClearType display with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 giving it a pixel density of 216ppi and an aspect ratio of 3:2. The ratio in part with improved Windows scaling is said to give it approximately 6 percent more viewing than a 13.3 inch screen like the MacBook Air that they used on stage as a comparison.
In addition to the improvements with screen and display, the Surface Pro 3 has its kickstand improved to feature a hinge-like mechanism that can extend from a 22 degree angle all the way down to an insane 150 degree angle. The hinge is built with friction so it stays sturdy in all of the angle and can be adjusted with relative ease. Aside from that the product is touted by Microsoft to have 15 to 20 percent more battery life and 10 percent more performance.
The new Type Cover was also revealed with it being larger to match the Pro 3’s increased size and is said to include a 68 percent larger track pad with a lot of improvements from the mediocre track pad that was found on the previous covers. The Cover also has a second magnetic space that can seal to the Pro 3 for improved stability for it to be more natural when using it in a lap.
Something else of note (pun intended) is the Surface Pen that is integrated seamlessly with OneNote. In addition to the 256 points of pressure which still remains good for art, the pen features a clicker on the top that you can use with certain functions (also replicates an actual retractable pen). With a click, you are automatically sent to a new page in OneNote where you can jot down things immediately and they will be saved to OneDrive. With two clicks, it serves as essentially the Snipping Tool/OneNote clipper where you can grab text from a website, picture, article, etc.
The Surface Pro 3 will come in a few configurations, but the important thing to note is that they finally have an Intel Core i3 and Core i7 configuration in addition to the Core i5 model. The Core i3 version starts at $799 and they will start going on sale tomorrow and they are open to preorder.
This certainly appears to be a great product that was put out on the surface (once again, pun intended), but it will be interesting to see how it performs and handles in everyday life to see if this really is a winner.
